Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, a member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, emphasized the importance of reviewing what has been written about history and returning to original documents to correct its course, calling for the pursuit of truth in writing historical events and not merely relying on recorded narratives. This came during a lecture he delivered on the occasion of the launch of his documented historical novel “Al-Jalandi Khalid bin Sultan Al Qasimi” on Saturday evening at the Sharjah International Book Fair, in the presence of Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, along with a number of writers, researchers, and cultural enthusiasts.
The Ruler of Sharjah spoke about his efforts in writing history and correcting what has been presented based on research and documentation, affirming that original documents correct history. He clarified that what he has presented in this field is not limited to pages or books, but includes vast encyclopedias that rely on tracking manuscripts and documents and investigating their content.
He urged university scholars to research history in the correct manner and to return to its original sources, noting that he possesses hundreds of thousands of manuscripts and documents to support their research and studies. He described himself as a researcher who works to transfer knowledge and deliver it to researchers and readers.
He discussed the role of historical novels in presenting facts in a literary style, considering them one of the cultural gateways that complement scientific research, investigation, poetry, and storytelling. He explained that the brevity of his novels is a consideration for people’s busy lives and a desire to encourage them to read and benefit from their content.
He revealed that writing his new novel “Al-Jalandi” took five days, with printing taking half a day, explaining that he follows large works with short and varied ones, through which he guides readers and introduces them to the methods of writing novels and theatrical and cultural works.
He indicated that he has been working on these projects for 54 years, describing what he has offered as little in comparison to his nation, while his authored works have reached 219, varying between history, scientific investigation, literature, novels, and theater.
He clarified that most novels address authority and governance and the conflicts associated with them, while he wishes to showcase the gentle side of history through his novels and the human experiences and situations they depict.
The new novel, published by Al Qasimi Publications in five chapters, recounts the biography of Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, nicknamed Al-Jalandi, through events spanning 38 years, evoking the social, political, and maritime life in the Arabian Gulf during the 19th century.
Its events move between Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Khasab, Muscat, and Lingah, culminating in the search for pearls, and it chronicles the transformations in the life of the main character between migration, imprisonment, and governance, alongside a love story that began in childhood and ended with the death of his beloved before their marriage.
Following the lecture, the Ruler of Sharjah signed the first copies of his new novel and gifted several copies to the attendees.
