Since he wrote his first article on “The Lost Poetics in the Taif Literary Club” in 1992, it has been clear that Faisal Al-Juhani does not write from the perspective of an observer of the cultural scene, but from within it, with an eye that does not hesitate to question and critique it.

This journey began with cultural journalism, intersected with literary criticism and cultural writing, and later expanded to include questions of novels, poetry, taste, awards, and cultural institutions, reaching the transformations imposed by digital platforms on the concept of the intellectual and the presence of literature.

In this dialogue, we revisited with Al-Juhani his relationship with reading and writing, and his vision of the function of the journalistic article in criticism, before he pointed out what he sees as a deeper crisis in the Saudi literary scene.. So here is the text of the dialogue..

• To begin with, how did your relationship with reading and writing form?

•• My father was close to the world of books and newspapers. He was a (school principal) in the field of education throughout his service, and he loved reading, which made it easier for me. I read early on (The Famous Five) and (The Princess of High Ambition) and (Saif ibn Dhuyazan), and at the beginning of middle school, I got to know the libraries of (Al-Sayyid Al-Mu’ayyad) and (Al-Ma’arif) which were in the old market area. Through them, I read: Al-Ajurumiyyah, Al-Kitab, and Qatr Al-Nada, and in literature, I enjoyed reading Agatha Christie and (One Thousand and One Nights). In high school, my relationship with (realism) solidified early on, as I read Naguib Mahfouz, Abdul Rahman Al-Sharqawi, Hanna Mina, and Yusuf Idris.

As for my relationship with writing, it began right after I graduated from university, and its beginning was strange and surprising: the first article I wrote was titled: (The Lost Poetics in the Taif Literary Club) in 1992, and I sent it to Saad Al-Humaidain (Al-Riyadh Newspaper), to find it published on Thursday of that week, in the (Thursday Culture) supplement on the first page, and the most prominent (column) in it, in bold color compared to the rest of the page.

The repercussions of that article were enormous, especially in my city, Taif. Perhaps the most notable among them for me was when Dr. Othman Al-Sini – after our night at the Al-Najm Al-Ateeq café – took me aside and said: “The people at the Taif Club are upset and are asking each other about this person who has revived their memories with a fiery article that leaves nothing behind, but do not worry about it, as long as you continue writing.” After that, there was a beautiful cultural page overseen by the exceptional (Mahmoud Traore) in the (Al-Riyadiyah) newspaper at that time, and I continued to send my articles to him for two consecutive years, then I began my relationship with the (Opinion) pages in 2003 after my marriage and settling in the city of (Jeddah), starting with (Al-Madina – Al-Watan – Makkah – Al-Hayat).

• In your articles, there is a clear presence of cultural, educational, and social issues.. which of these occupies you the most?

•• In a previous period, and in the (Opinion) pages, it was preferable for me to (diversify) my articles, so I wrote about social and educational issues (as I was part of this system), but the presence that truly suits me is writing in the cultural pages (Al-Watan – Al-Hayat) where I continued to write from (2002-2017) approximately.

• Do you see yourself as a cultural writer, or a critic, or have these classifications become less important in light of the concept of the intellectual?

•• For me, my methodological approaches have revolved around poetic and narrative texts, and perhaps they call that (criticism), while cultural writing is a broader field in its engagement with ideas, systems, and general cultural contexts, and this is what I practiced as well. However, it has not been sufficient so far, as I believe that the (intellectual) is one who combines both (with merit).

• Has the journalistic article been able to perform the function of true criticism?

•• Certainly, until 2010, journalism clearly and methodically embraced critical practices. I cannot forget (Thursday Culture) – Al-Riyadh, for three decades starting from 1988, this supplement shone with the efforts of truly (great) professors: Al-Ghudami, Al-Surayhi, Al-Khazindar, Abdul Salam Al-Masdi, Hassan Dhazah, Ibrahim Aslan, and Mujahed Al-Zahrani.

The critical article was also present in the (Voices) supplement – Al-Yamamah magazine, during the same period, which was creatively supervised by the poet Muhammad Jabr Al-Harbi.

In (Al-Watan) newspaper – 2006, Dr. Othman Al-Sini wanted the cultural page to be revived with names interested in prose poetry and the art of the novel, he wanted cleverly to document the emergence of the second generation of critics: (Muhammad Al-Abbas – Muhammad Al-Harz – Abdullah Al-Safar – Faisal Al-Juhani). But the truth is, this generation did not know how to announce itself afterward, nor did it receive recognition and interaction from the (stars) of the first-generation critics for reasons related to inflated convictions!

For me, I approached in that page many local novels, especially:

(The Lush, Traps of Scent, The Ceiling of Sufficiency, Throwing Sparks, The Ring, East of the Valley, The Looted, Hunting), and to ensure that the reader finds the novel they want, I also approached the novels of the pioneers from Western novelists: (Zweig, Kundera, Kazantzakis, Dostoevsky). These examples confirm that the journalistic article can fulfill the function of true criticism, and it has another cultural value, as it allows a large group of readers to know (literature) and (criticism) together.

• You have articles critiquing “our cultural literary product,” and you have been quite critical of some aspects of the cultural scene.. what is the fundamental problem that you see hindering more mature cultural production?

•• It is not trivial to say, as Caruthers once expressed in a narrative manifestation: “The novel should offer a new philosophical understanding of the universe, humanity, and life,” and it is not far from evoking the obscurities of the universe to Kundera’s consciousness, which made him say loudly: “A novel that does not reveal a part of existence that still exists is an immoral novel. Every novel must tell its reader: that life is more complex than you think.”

Thus, the core problem that hinders the production of more mature (literature) is the narrowing perspective of writers on the existences and cultures around them, causing their works to revolve in narrow sensory and superficial horizons, within the same cultural fabric. Our narrative product does not include deeper existential questions that resonate with the echoes of life and death and the mysteries of the universe.

Most of our literary product generally revolves within the same cultural fabric. Those who remain confined to their homes will not see what the outside is teeming with, resulting in works that are extremely simplistic, not interacting with cultural contexts, currents, and literary texts outside of it. Therefore, our novels have settled in the square of (modernity), a modernity that reached us slowly over time, since Western modernity in the early (20th) century, until its elements were transferred to Arab culture (since the 1950s) to reach us its novelistic calls late in the mid-nineties, when Al-Qusaybi published his novel (Apartment of Freedom), at a time when local novels – had they kept pace with the stages – should have turned around, to find the (postmodern) Western novel preparing for the next phase, while the most important Arabic novels fell under (postmodern) novels. It is evident from all these transformations that we have lagged behind the time of the Western novel by 60 years, and behind the time of the Arabic novel by 30 years!

• Do you think that the Saudi literary scene suffers from a creativity crisis, or is the problem in the mechanisms of discovering creativity and presenting it to the reader?

•• I did not want to say: (no) amidst that abundant product (especially in the art of the novel), but scientific and cultural integrity compels me to say (yes).. we suffer from a creativity crisis, there are writers who think that the novel is a material recording of reality, or a documentation of a historical story, or a rich expression of bygone memories, or highlighting the geography and rituals of the (town) and (village) in a single narrative form and a (singular) voice, where the author’s voice rises loudly and directly.. All of the above was working on (the text): history – reality – personal repercussions, but it is not (the novel). The value of the novel lies in itself.. in its complexity of the familiar, in its (artistic structure): inventing a new clock for the new time – multiple narrative forms – dialogue that includes (all) narrative elements – textual interrelations with other texts and new arts – creativity in inventing new ways to formulate the overall narrative structure:

(In the novel “If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler” by Calvino, we find several stories/novels.. when the reader tries to find the rest of the novel, he finds himself starting a new novel, and then he becomes one of the characters in the story)!

Perhaps our distance from Arab and international awards is a testament to that.

In the last (7) years, the most we have achieved is that three of our novels reached the short and long lists (The Higher Horizon – Fatima Abdul Hamid 2023 – Bahbal – Rija Alam 2024 – My Hands Do Not Tremble – Maha Al-Yemeni 2026).

But to be fair with the beginning of the new millennium: we must commend examples that were somewhat close to the fever of (the novel/the novel): for Yusuf Al-Muhaimid, three novels cannot be passed over quickly in the artistic memory: (Traps of Scent, More than Stairs, and A Man Followed by Crows), and for Awad Al-Asimi: (Hunting, and The Looted). Also, most of Rija Alam’s novels are rich in artistic creativity: (The Ring – The Collar of the Dove – The Bird’s Hearth), and for Abdu Khal: (Fasooq – Throwing Sparks), and for Hussein Ali Hussein, an amazing second novel (Touching the Edges), as well as for Muhammad Hassan Al-Awan (The Beaver – A Small Death), and for Leila Al-Juhani (The Desolate Paradise – The Mother’s Room), and for Maha Al-Yemeni (My Hands Do Not Tremble), and for Fatima Abdul Hamid (The Higher Horizon).

• To what extent do personal relationships and flattery affect the evaluation of literary works and the creation of cultural stardom?

•• One of the most important reasons, of course, for hindering the value of the cultural product: personal relationships and the flattery that occurs within them. Most of them possess the utmost degree of utilitarian social intelligence!

• Can the Saudi critic today express his opinion freely, especially when the subject of criticism is related to a literary name or a cultural institution that has its presence?

•• To a large extent: (yes).

• How can criticism be returned to the ordinary reader?

•• The ordinary reader needs, at first, to acquire (scientific methodology) in thinking and judging things: critical awareness – objectivity – reliance on reason and evidence – acceptance of the reality of knowledge accumulation, and the plurality of methodologies and cultural contexts. From here, the beginning of the formation of the true cultural community begins.

As for the ordinary reader’s relationship with (criticism), he does not need to know criticism as analytical methodologies, but he needs it to understand literature and its manifestations, stages, and implications. Unfortunately, his need has not found anyone to respond to it – especially in the context of articles and social media platforms, amidst the preoccupation of our critical figures with polishing their names and defending their old possessions.

Let me give you an example of that scene: from time to time, a dispute ignites between two prominent critical names, over (topics) that the reader and even the ordinary intellectual do not benefit from. Recently, a debate emerged between them regarding the novelist (Osama Al-Musallam) and his overwhelming popularity. The first professor shows tolerance towards this novelist considering that his product touches the imagination and style of the reading community, and that this popularity is a phenomenon worth studying later. That’s all there is to it. The local reader did not come out (with anything). Did our great critic (justify) the fact that the fantasy novels of (Al-Musallam) belong to the world of literature?

Did he (clarify) the historical context to which this novel belongs through the ages of the novel? And if it were an opening for a new type of novel, could it continue across a generation of writers? Or will (Al-Musallam) remain alone on the throne of fantasy literature through time?

As for the other professor who attacked (Al-Musallam) and his popularity on the grounds that the novel he writes is outside of literature (only), he did not (clarify) the conditions that make some novels belong to the realm of true artistic literature. Our (elegant) critic did not (clarify) to the reader the artistic elements of the classical novel (according to Edwin Muir) that make a novel a dramatic novel, for example? Or according to the Russian formalists in their famous distinction between (the narrative text) and (the artistic structure), which gives a novel a (artistic) value.. (aesthetic).

I assert that if our critic opposing Al-Musallam’s experience (highlighted) to the reader and the follower the fact that (Al-Musallam’s) novels – despite working on the fantasy theme – are ultimately (stories), lacking the themes that make a novel a literary novel, at least, to write to them about those artistic themes, so that they can understand and know them. But our critic was interested in the formalism of (the debate) and (Star Wars)!

Also, the absence of serious critical texts has led to the absence of the (aware) reader and the (aware) novelist as well.

• In the age of social media, almost everyone has their own platform. Has this contributed to expanding the cultural field, or to increasing noise at the expense of knowledge?

•• Social media has liberated culture from the authority and monopoly of platforms, but it has also liberated it from the standards of verification and critical awareness, which many of those social media platforms lack, and thus the ability to scrutinize ideas and texts on the (scientific/critical thinking) machine is absent, and to compare them with the higher models and serious cultural contexts (beyond the local). This allows us to achieve a fair judgment (on the value of what we have in experiences), and to accurately and fairly determine the place our culture occupies.

• How do you view the phenomenon of the “digital intellectual”? And can the number of followers become a criterion of cultural influence?

•• To reflect the expected answer, let’s say: yes, the number of followers can become one of the criteria of cultural influence, but it is the negative cultural influence, which makes the collective cultural awareness subservient to emotional discourses and ideas (herd culture), far from the lights of science and creative knowledge!

There are many ready examples: Sheikh Aaidh Al-Qarni is followed by 20 million, advisor Tariq Al-Habib is followed by 5 million, and folk poet Turki Al-Mizani is followed by more than a quarter of a million (the whole work is in millions), while the other side, which is closer to the borders of true culture, attracts only a few (thousands – hundreds).

Dr. Saleh Ziad is followed by (24) thousand, Dr. Saad Al-Bazai is followed by (93) thousand, and poet and playwright Ahmed Al-Mulla is followed by (9) thousand.

Can you believe that poet Hamad Al-Fuqaih, one of our most important poets, who wrote the (new) poem that surpasses with sharp poetic awareness all experiences of modern poetry, is followed by only (170) followers?!

All of this is due to the negative influence of collective culture. I do not exaggerate; this is the truth (even if it is painful for all of us)!

• The Saudi cultural scene is witnessing today a wide movement of institutions, initiatives, awards, and events. Has this movement reflected on the quality of the literary product to the same extent?

•• Culture must be alive, active, and influential. This is the condition for cultural action, but this movement must be objective and fair to true culture.

The (Professional Literature Association) has emerged on the scene with (good) intentions to serve local literature, and an ideal founding statement. However, the outputs (each sings in its own valley). The (Literary Partner) initiative was an opportunity for those who want to tell (their story) to the people. I honestly do not know how to describe this moment. I read about the events and seminars and find in them much simplicity, repetition, and a regression to bygone literary moments in poetry, novels, and criticism. I used to tell my friends: the easiest types of propositions are those like: (Women in Saudi Novels), (The Other in Ahmed Al-Samari’s Story..), and so on, and this is what many titles and topics of (the partner/association) revolve around. Poetry has its freedom. The novel in this scene is innocent, coming from old specters, where complexity and renewal should be.

80 ambassadors represent the voices of their literary regions, quality is more important here than quantity. I hold these responsible for that noisy randomness. Did all these agree to present a culture with a particular identity, especially one that interacts with serious and new literary cases and transcends in other literatures?

Another matter: it is nice that those in charge of the association feel the importance of translation as an interactive cultural act, but I see that this act is presented (timidly), you feel that when they call it (an initiative).

It is said that they translated 350 books? I wonder about the identity, about the criteria?

I read: 350 Saudi books received translation grants, and I do not understand anything. What I clearly understand is that (the Kalima Translation Project) in (Abu Dhabi), which was established a decade and a half before (our good initiative), translates 150 books every year, and its translated publications have reached about 1,500 books (without starting from initiatives and grants and something like that), the most strange thing in the outputs of that association’s work (recently) is the introduction of (premium packages) for authors who want to do flashy advertising and book signing parties and seminars. (Of course, these packages are not concerned with whether the book is good or bad, convincing or failing?).. The truth is, I pray that the Literature Association starts anew, with goals and works based on (correct and pure inputs) so that (outputs) can always be predicted to be convincing and influential.

• Does the abundance of cultural events necessarily mean the existence of a real cultural movement?

•• Perhaps my answer to the previous question also answers this question. But let me give you a strange example of that movement: a virtuous sister from (Asir) published a novel, which has not been a year yet. This sister kept (circling) around many cultural cafés in the cities of the Kingdom, to present her novel (she herself was taking care of the critical reading of her novel in those meetings), can you believe that the promotional and signing parties did not end until just days before writing this dialogue! Is the novel itself convincing? It is (good) but does not rise to the level of mature artistic works. The (subject) for her was easy; she did not need in her promotional journey except to choose a (café) and coordinate with one of the (ambassadors) to announce the (novel) in the (Literary Partner) initiative, and undoubtedly the limited chairs in the café are reserved for ambassadors and friends!

• Has your reading taste changed over time? Are there books you once saw as great in your beginnings and then changed your stance on them?

•• Certainly, it must change, otherwise I would be a miserable statue of stone.

Transformations are the fate of culture, and the accumulation of knowledge is one of the most important (initial) conditions for correct scientific thinking.

Long ago, I was impressed by (Ahmed Amin, Mikhail Naimy, and Maroun Aboud), and after that, my most important references for understanding literature were (Saeed Yaqteen, Hamid Lahmadi, Muhammad Khattabi, and Faisal Darraj), then translations, (Gerard Genette, Roland Barthes, Todorov, and their peers). In literature as well, I was enamored with (Naguib Mahfouz), my graduation thesis from the Arabic Language Department revolved around (the conditions of realism in Naguib Mahfouz’s novels). In Cairo, I accidentally entered a seminar about (Naguib Mahfouz), and I told them in a brief intervention: “You have (Tariq Imam) alive and creating endlessly, and then you regress to a distant past, where scholars and critics have exhausted everything related to Naguib Mahfouz completely.”

After the time of (Naguib Mahfouz), I immersed myself in the world of the exceptional صنع الله إبراهيم in his (loud) novels with awareness and a huge archive of various worlds, and with his high-value (collages), and since then until now, I have moved beyond (realistic) works to the new novel being written in Arabic: (Tariq Imam, Iman Mursal, Samar Yazbek, and Muhammad Samir Nada).

As for Western novels, they are also the new novels for me, heralded by Alain Robbe-Grillet: Italo Calvino, Don DeLillo, Thomas Pynchon, John Fowles, and Haruki Murakami.

Convictions and stages must change (each time), and that is a natural matter in the law of humans in general.
